OUR WORK

The basis for our work is helping people gain a higher mastery over something we call the Human Operating system. The name refers to how our neural system influences how we respond to things we take in through our senses. From the time we are born, this human operating system constructs default operating paths based on our individual experiences. These defaults heavily influence how we listen, speak, and move our bodies. They also shape the decisions we make and how we lead. Most of the time, they serve us well, but there are also times when they don't.

Our work focuses on creating awareness of these default tendencies and helping people develop the ability to generate a unique response when they want their future to be something different from a repeat of the past. Following default tendencies leads to what we call business as usual. We help leaders enable people and teams to go beyond business as usual.

Over the past 35 years Dick and Tom have provided this material to dozens of companies, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations, including Fortune 500 companies in manufacturing, retail, oil, aerospace, high tech, real estate, construction, chemicals, insurance, agriculture, textiles, and defense. 

ABOUT US

Dick Haab

Dick started his career as a chemical engineer at Dow Chemical. He quickly became sought by other companies for his impressive turnaround capabilities. At one point, he worked with chip development teams at Intel, where the team leaders had PhDs in neurophysiology. Dick used the nervous system knowledge and insights he gained from them to enhance his own insights and helped Intel and other companies improve their communication, leadership, and performance. He started his own company called the Performance Leadership Group and, through word of mouth only, his business grew and took him to some of the country’s most respected companies. Dick, now retired, is the originator of the material that continues to form the basis for the company he and Tom started (The High Performance Leadership Group), and is the subject of the book they co-authored (Going Beyond Business as Usual). Dick still coaches and advises on a limited basis. 

Tom Scott

Tom has held a variety of C-level positions (CIO, COO, and President) for the past 30 years, working in multiple industries, including consulting, retail, manufacturing, and high tech. Some of the larger companies he worked for include Accenture, Nordstrom, VF Corp., Dollar Tree, and Stihl. He has led multiple business functions, including information systems and technology, distribution, operations, logistics, customer service, call centers, light-manufacturing, human resources, and pharmacy. Tom first met Dick and engaged him to work with his teams at Nordstrom, and because of working together, achieved impressive results. He has used Dick's distinctions, insights, concepts, and tools for over 30 years, gaining a high level of mastery by applying them in a wide variety of situations. Tom retired as a business executive in January 2024, and is now, on a part time basis, carrying forward the work Dick started.

SERVICES

Keynote Speaking

Since his retirement, multiple organizations have sought Tom as a keynote speaker. He is available to speak internationally on an in-person and virtual basis. Dick has some availability to speak to virtual audiences. The material they speak on applies to all types of groups and can be tailored to their specific needs.

Training Seminars

Dick has long said he always considered himself a coach, not a consultant. Once people are introduced to the concepts and insights Dick originated, they need to practice and gain experience to develop mastery in them. Periodic coaching assists that process. Frequently, this is provided as a free extension of the training sessions, although more extended and comprehensive coaching is available through custom engagements.

Leadership Coaching

The principle nature of Dick's work was to hold public and private seminars that helped people enhance their leadership and communication. Tom intends to continue Dick's work in this area. Seminars range from a few hours to periodic sessions over six-months, all customized to meet the needs of the group. The most used formats have been the 1-2 day seminars for groups ranging from 10 to 50 people and the six-month advanced leadership seminars for 8 to 12 people.

Consulting

Producing high performance results is the focus of the work Dick and Tom are engaged in, and they are experts at helping leaders and teams achieve their desired outcomes. The scope of what they do extends beyond their leadership coaching based on the human operating system to include any kind of consulting engagement focused on achieving specific outcomes.
